The Flora Conservancy at Carondelet Park was
born out of the efforts of the Carondelet Master Plan process and now will begin its first
full year in residence there. The Flora Conservancy, now active in Forest Park for seven
years, has expanded their volunteer boundaries to include Carondelet Park. We are very
fortunate for their support as well as additional support from the City of St. Louis Parks
Department, the St. Louis Master Gardeners Association, the Holly Hills Improvement Association
and the Friends of Carondelet Park.
The Flora Conservancy at Carondelet Park was initiated in 2005 as a
cooperative with the Flora Conservancy, a not-for-profit organization in partnership with
the St. Louis Department of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, whose mission is to design,
install, enhance, and maintain garden areas as outlined in the Park Master Plans.
The organization is comprised of a dedicated group of volunteers who work in the Park each
week approximately from April through October, with further winter opportunities to volunteer
in the Municipal Greenhouses in Forest Park. If you enjoy gardening, it's a wonderful opportunity
to plant a variety of flowers and plants in designated beautiful settings. The cultural charm of
Carondelet Park provides an enchanting backdrop to your gardening efforts.
You will also have the opportunity to learn as you garden. All volunteers
are offered on-site training given by horticulturalists and Master Gardeners. Topics covered
during the season are: soil amendments and composting; plant nutrition; plant identification;
installation and design; tree care; and plant propagation.
As a volunteer, it's also a chance to spend time with fellow gardeners, enjoying the outdoors
together, exchange plant tales, and share valuable information and experiences. Not only will you
benefit from gardening efforts, you will be a part of the realization of the Master Plan for
Cardondelet Park, a historical landmark of grand beauty that all visitors may behold and enjoy. |
